Defects In Personal Qualities

Qualities in humans encompass a wide range of characteristics that contribute to a person's character, behaviour and interactions with others. Ultimately these qualities define human nature and shape our interactions and contributions to society. 

The shift from the Medieval Era to the modern period has brought about profound transformations in various aspects of human existence, including physical and psychological characteristics, as well as the broader social fabric and cultural values.

Human’s quality was always a concern and people had their ways to size them in others. In medieval times Phrenology today classified as pseudoscience involved measuring bumps and contours on the skull to supposedly determine mental traits and personality characteristics.

Later was physiognomy that claimed to infer personality traits from facial and other physical characteristics. By the end of the century, researchers like Francis Galton began to develop more objective and systematic methods like questionnaires for measuring personality traits and used statistical analysis to identify different characteristics.

Compared to individuals 100 years ago modern humans are likely to possess an enhanced capacity for abstract thinking and empathy. With the passing of times it has brought about a transformation with increased individualism, technological advancement, evolving political systems, a more secular and diverse cultural landscape. We are possessed to judge qualities in others but it works well when we first are the quality we seek in others.

We depend on teachers playing a crucial role in fostering human qualities in students. They are expected to act as educators, mentors, and role models, shaping not just knowledge but also character and values. Parents, families, and the wider community also contribute to the development of these qualities. 

Modern education develops the intellect and imparts skills but not necessarily promotes human qualities in its syllabus. This stands true when we encounter educated and professionals who exhibit defects of their personal human qualities. To site a few examples: in judiciary some advocate practice using the system to affect fairness, efficiency, and effectiveness of the legal process to their advantage -- doctors crossing lines of professional nobility for their materialistic gains -- a senior cop falsely implicates her spouse’s family -- an engineer’s defective human quality reflects in his executed substandard projects -- industrialist are involved in ownership and management of industry but fail to manage elderly parents and displace them from home -- politicians unable to run proceedings inside parliament - surely a misfit to run nation’s governance. We are great at examining quality in gems and engineering products but fail in recognizing quality in human life partners resulting in early divorces.

Our daily national report card ‘News’ if any reflection of our state of affairs focuses on nothing but frauds, crime, corruption, hate speeches, scams riot, to report about. It’s time not just knowing but taking corrective measures to better the defective human qualities.  

From primary to higher secondary 12 years to inculcate and infuse 12 qualities like: respect, caring, kindness, empathy, compassion, consideration, patience, generosity, charity, accountability, diligence and perseverance as part of our periodic teachings is not asking much.

Possessing and conducting our actions with good human qualities is bound to be rewarding individually and in a larger country perspective be a safer place to live in harmony and prosperity. While we are climbing global economic status it is important to also work on our Teachings, Learning’s & Obedience of good human qualities.

Good character is not formed in a week or a month. It is created little by little day by day. Protracted and patient effort is needed to develop good character.

Good qualities need to be appreciated in others as their expressions are backed with a sense of belonging with the divine. Bad qualities are about ignorance of the divine in you.
