To lie seemingly is one of the first sins exercised by humans. If you wondered at what age does it happen? Well the wise say in today’s time as soon as one learns to speak. Suppressing a lie is equivalent to having committed the lie yourself or even by simply to lead someone to believe something that is not true, without saying it in words. Lying is a subject that is almost universal in nature and the most well worded lies are “I am sorry”, “Trust me”, “I love you”.

A lie may cost nothing hence chosen over the costlier seeming truth. However, when the truth is known, the said lies can cost them everything. A late realisation, truth would have been a better option. Liars prey upon the trust of the innocent as their most useful tool. An innocent will never lie to those who trust him/her but are cautious trusting those who lie. These souls can bear the hurt of your truth but never comfort them with a lie. Your one lie is enough to question all your truths by them.

Lies no matter how big or small always crack the very foundation of the trust. The worst thing about being lied is to know you weren’t worth the truth. The worst of feeling that sticks upon is in knowing you were used and lied by someone you loved and trusted. People are never the same with those who lied with them, that’s why the wise preach Truth may hurt a little while a lie hurts forever.

Condemning liars is understandable however there is a need to understand the absence of maturity in handling others wrongs/failure which largely influences them to lie than being truthful. Nothing wrong being upset but why overreact, being forever upset and never to believe the liar ever again is an unwanted sticky feeling. Forgiveness in you will direct an understanding to examine their circumstances, their need to do wrong, define an appropriate penance for the other to correct the wrong doing. Lying does damage feelings scarring reputations and making good the loss at times a lot difficult. But living with hurt for rest of the life may not be worth it. Forgiving* helps overcome the same. (* Not knowing forgiveness is why many can’t Forgive) an earlier post may be a good read too).

Most habitual liars think “Ah, what’s it going to hurt if I lied this time?” Well ask the few who choose not to lie. They love truth because it's the way we're created by God. Every step we take in the direction of valuing truth and resisting falsity, moves us closer to understanding that God is Truth and to fulfilling Jesus' promise, that this all-important truth will heal us and make us free. All scriptures across religions revere the Truth. Hinduism tells us that truth is ever triumphant. Guru Nanak Devji, too reminds us that “Truth is the panacea of all ills,” and that “Truth is high but higher still is truthful living.” The Guru wants us to realise that God watches us all the time and that our lives are spent under His constant gaze. "He created all, and He Himself watches over us. Some are close to Him and some are far away. The way we behave in our life brings us near or takes us away! Only by following the path of truthfulness can one get nearer to the Lord. Habitual lying is an expression of misunderstanding God.

Be cautious not to separate the alphabets lie from Believe.
