A tapasvi living up a mountain for over 45 years decided to go settle on the other side of the mountain. As he was passing a village few children kept running around making fun of him. One kid got closer and tried pulling the bead dangling from his hand. The Tapasvi strangely reacted slapping the kid hard enough to injure one eye. He was not a local so soldiers in the area caught and took him to the King. When questioned his replies were all vague, considering him a spy disguised as a fakir the King ordered his hanging.
Chained and awaiting his hanging, the Tapasvi thinks of his Lord and questions; in spite over 45 years in penance why the hanging. The Lord responded and asked the tapasvi to make a wish. The tapasvi overwhelmed to have this attention said lord bless me. I already did when I gave you a human form; make another wish replied the Lord. After a moments silence requests give me what I deserve. The lord responded, what you deserve will fall short of what is your desire or need, try once more. The tapasvi’s was afraid to ask something small because he expected to get more if Rab did his Hissab considering his years of penance. He again said lord ap Insaff kare and give me what I deserve.
The lord replied you had an opportunity to ask for ‘Forgiveness’ (shamma) something you needed most, but you choose I do ‘insaff’ giving what you deserve, in which case you need to be hanged. Why be hanged after years of penance said the Tapasvi. Well your old and new Karmas contributed to it. Recall as a growing kid you hurt butterflies poking stick in their eyes and killed a few, but lord that was a childish act should be overlooked the tapasvi interrupted. Sure I would have, had you forgiven the child in the village but you slapped and damaged his eye. When you ask what you deserve you have much more to account and pay for. In the midst of the conversation soldiers took the tapasvi to the gallows. The Lord continued, as a teenager you were the support system for your parents but you ran away from home. The stone that you sat on for 45 years took the pain of your weight, the nature and its surrounding met your needs, you failed to acknowledge and be in gratitude (shukarana) for them. Whenever mountain climbers passed by, you felt your privacy being disturbed and often responded angrily with words or gestures. All such conscious and unconscious sins have to be accounted for. Just then the tapasvi’s noose tightened.
We may all know our age, but are unaware of the multiple times - the long periods we were part of this universal creation prior to the existing life (referring to the 84,00,000 joon’s; lifetimes or other life forms). In the Creator’s vast creation of all livings, we humans are insignificant. Our special ability to think was to make life significant not ourselves. The creator’s insaff with our good and bad karmas are as precise to the grant of our next breath. Several sakhis are testimony how people evil and deep in sins were transformed when they took to Naam Simran and seeked forgiveness. Instantly their bad karmas got written off and for many pending birth-death cycles were written off in their dreams.
Human’s may consider themselves mighty but do not forget there is an almighty and it HIS Grace (nadar) we all need to seek continuously.
