The body is wild and the mind is foolish, practicing selfishness, wickedness, greed, arrogance, egotism, corruption and more. Life passes away and like the seas and oceans overflowing with water, so vast are one’s own sins.
“Sin in the eyes of God” we need to fear and penance. It could be by attitude, from our actions, by neglect or by intent. It simply happens with our thoughts, words and deeds. A sin could be mortal sin that imperils your soul and hence you forfeit heaven and opt for hell by your free will and actions. Venial sins are less serious breaches of God’s law.
Sin of commission involves the wilful act of doing something that violates God’s commands as said in our scriptures. These sins are easily recognizable and we are familiar to the fact that it should not have been done. A few common sins that distant us from the lord: (Slanderers, pride, blasphemers, attachment, greed, anger, stealing, swearing, etc.)
Sin of omission is when we fail to do something one can and ought to do however one chooses to deliberately and freely not to do. Neglecting to do what is right, good acts or tasks left undone, acts or tasks God expects us to do, but we don’t do them. Examples to include could be like not praying, not forgiving or loving others, neglecting to care for those in need and much more.
All sins are equal in the eyes of God from the seemingly gigantic, more obvious sin to the seemingly small, supposedly minor sin. Therefore when we neglect to do something that God has told us to do we are sinning against God. This learning brings an acceptance that I am a sinner - I have committed so many sins and thus must partake in the Lord's sublime essence, through the Guru's Teachings – for eliminating my sins and sufferings.
“One who is accepted at the Court of the Lord shall be accepted in courts everywhere. Wherever he goes, he is recognized as honourable. Seeing his face, all sinners are saved. Within him is the Treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Through the Naam, he is exalted. He worships the Name, and believes in the Name; the Name erases all his sinful mistakes.” SGGS 87
