True gratitude is a deeply felt love and appreciation for something or someone in your life. But most of us are robbed of this goodness from our lives. Grumbling comes easy but gratitude doesn’t. Most of us do not realise holding hands with these thieves of gratitude has consequences on our leadership, our workplace cultures, influencing poorly on relationship and one’s own emotional status.

The thieves who loot gratitude from individuals are documented by research and identified as is narcissism, cynicism and materialism/envy.

Narcissism keeps you in a grandiose sense of self importance, seeking constant praise and administration and a sense of entitlement; it exploits others, without guilt or shame. Frequently demeans, intimidates, bullies or belittles others.

Cynicism the feeling of distrust or that something isn’t going to work out well, a sneering disbelief in sincerity or integrity of others.

Materialism is the philosophical belief that the world is made of material and that there are no other types of entity (things). One is constantly comparing us to others. Associated with anxiety, depression and broken relationships it smashes the happiness and peace of mind.

The lack of gratitude is contagious and dancing with the thieves, gratitude is far pushed away. Gratitude is our best weapon, an ally to counter these internal and external threats that rob us of sustainable joy. Gratitude cannot be requested, demanded, or coerced, it can only be given. It is a gift, not an exchange. Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others. The habit of gratitude mind brings us into the realm of the divine. Gratitude is the recognition that life owes me nothing, and that all the good I have is a gift.

Dwelling in Gratitude: A practice of gratitude that allows you to acknowledge all that has supported you..... a spiritual practice.

Teachings from Bhagwad Gita: Surrender yourself to HIM completely; make your life and actions as true offering to Him, Acknowledging his role in all your affairs and expressing your Gratitude.

Alhamdulillah is a prayer to show gratitude towards Allah and said many times. When you wake up, remember Allah (glory be to Him) and recite Dua’ for waking up. Give thanks for making it through the night and for being alive. During the day, try to keep mindful of Allah (glory be to Him) by repeating phrases praising, glorifying and thanking Him.
