At the start of a new school semester a class teacher overheard other subject teachers discussing her class students as a distracted lot and some just can’t remember an earlier day’s teachings.
Taking responsibility as their class teacher she decided to help the children by reintroducing them to the meaning, understanding and importance of remembrance in one’s life.
She walks into class next day and writes on board. ‘Remembering is easy its forgetting that is hard and then she stamps her right foot on the floor saying ‘avoid distractions’ as you remember only what you want to. Soon the students stamped theirs and murmured ‘no distraction, raising their attention levels.
She then said to remember is to be able to bring back a piece of information into your mind, or to keep a piece of information in your memory. She emphasized nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it by listening well and with awareness, facilitating memory in its active process of mental search is retaining and retrieving what is learned.
The teacher addressed in detail certain memory tricks to help remember; link it – sleep on it – self test – write it out – use mnemonics – talk to the self – etc. The more you practice them more naturally the information becomes easy to commit to memory. Experiment with a few and find out which ones work for you.
Life is not all about academic learning and it’s remembering, turning to the board she then writes “Can you remember who you were, more than the world telling who you should be” let’s talk about this. Once again there were many foot stamping by students a reassurance to the teacher of their attention.
Others influence persists ‘who you should be’ to which one gets lost in achieving those goals. Failing to laugh by remembering the day’s one cried or cry by remembering the day’s one laughed is the poor dis connect with self and a reflection of one being busy surviving in life but failing to remember living life.
Let’s try to remember those parts of ourselves we didn’t know we’d lost so far, especially our origin and the being we are - different from other livings.
As worthless, ignorant fools we fail to dwell upon our Creator who fashioned, adorned and decorated us. We fail to remember the One who in the fire of the womb preserved us, in our infancy gave us milk to drink, in the flower of youth gave food, pleasure and understanding. As worthless beings we do not remember and hence do not appreciate in the least the good deeds done for us.
Why fail to remember His grace by which we abide in comfort upon earth with family and friends, which provides all necessities of life, the cool water, peaceful breeze and priceless fire. He gave us the hands, feet, ears, eyes and tongue and yet we forsake Him and attach to others. That what passes away we believe to be permanent, that which is immanent we believe to be far away. We struggle for what we must eventually leave and turn away from the creator our help and support.
To remember our Creator one is most distinguished dwells in peace, never lacking and generous to help others. One conquers their soul, never to grieve, overcoming fear and experiences all sorts of joy.
The bell rings and teacher’s last words were; “in remembrance of God all things are known, hopes are fulfilled and filth of the mind is removed”
